Civil Rights Litigation: Beyond the Constitution is a course that surveys federal statutes that create civil rights and, consequently, are often the source of litigation. The course will begin an introductory unit that examines notions of citizenship and civil rights. Thereafter, students will examine several federal statutes that create civil rights. In so doing, students will consider how the federal statute supplements constitutional rights and upon whom these statutory rights are conferred. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to, public accommodations, housing, the rights of language minorities, and the rights of people with disabilities. Additionally, students may consider how selected state legislatures have enhanced or limited the civil rights and liberties of persons within their states. We will approach these issues from historical, doctrinal, and critical perspectives. Exam Info: Exam administered during exam period.
