Addressing Secondary Addictions in Drug & Alcohol Treatment Although the primary goal of substance abuse treatment is abstinence from drugs and alcohol, there are a percentage of A&D clients for whom this single focus won't work. How does a counselor prioritize treatment goals when clients have secondary issues such as incest, sex addiction, gambling, debting, eating disorders, adult children of alcoholics or some combination of the above?
