Externship:PVLA

Intellectual Property is recommended but not a required prerequisite. Students participating in this externship will spend 12 hours per week at the offices of Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in center city Philadelphia. Responsibilities will include daily contact with artists (visual, performing, etc.) and authors who seek legal advice or referral to an attorney from PVLA. Typically, students will provide PVLA clients with written materials responsive to the clients' needs, and communicate with clients and PVLA's volunteer attorneys to arrange for short- or long-term legal representation on a wide variety of areas of the law. Students will interview clients for short-term representation and may observe interviews of clients with long-term legal needs. Students may also attend educational seminars offered by PVLA. For more information about PVLA, see www.pvla.org Externs are required to meet with the faculty advisor on a regular basis and must keep a detailed log of their externship work. In addition, each extern will research and prepare a pamphlet on a legal issue or topic of the extern's choice (in consultation with PVLA) to be distributed to PVLA clients. The faculty advisor will consult with the supervising attorney at PVLA periodically during the externship, but the final grade will be assigned by the faculty advisor.
