Title IX at 50

Title IX at 50. 1 credit. Meets every other Monday from 1:30-3:30. ?No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.? Fifty years after its enactment, these thirty-seven words continue to impact all aspects of education. In this course, we will begin by examining the history and development of Title IX, including an examination of Title VI, the ability of individuals to file claims, and be awarded damages. We will then turn to the specific issues surrounding athletics, sexual misconduct, and the myriad of other issues which don?t receive as much attention but still fall within Title IX. Guest speakers will present as relevant and appropriate. Assessment will be based on class participation and presentations.
